EYON Eye & Laser Institute — Kharadi, Pune
Burning, gritty or tired eyes are not something you have to live with. At EYON Eye & Laser Institute in Kharadi, Pune, our ocular surface department finds out why your eyes feel dry, using the IDRA dry eye analyser and meibography, and then treats the cause, not just the symptoms. EYON is the first centre in Pune to offer MiBoFlo thermal therapy for blocked oil glands, as confirmed by the manufacturer. Patients come to us from Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Wagholi, Chandan Nagar, Kalyani Nagar, Magarpatta and Hadapsar.
Does this sound like you?
- Burning or stinging eyes
- A gritty, sandy feeling
- Red, tired or heavy eyes, especially by evening
- Watering, even though your eyes feel dry
- Blur that clears when you blink
- Discomfort with screens, air conditioning or contact lenses
- Crusty or sticky lids in the morning
What causes dry eye?
Your tears have three layers: an oily outer layer, a watery middle layer and a mucus inner layer. The oil comes from tiny meibomian glands in your eyelids, about 25 to 40 in each upper lid and 20 to 30 in each lower lid. When that oil thickens and blocks the glands (meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD), tears evaporate too fast. The eye then makes extra tears that run off instead of staying on the surface, which is why dry eyes so often water.
Common reasons include long hours on screens (we blink less), air-conditioned offices, contact lenses, age, hormonal changes, blepharitis, rosacea, some medicines such as isotretinoin, and eye makeup on the lid edge.
Screen time and dry eyes.
Many of our dry eye patients work long days at screens in the IT parks around Kharadi. Staring at a screen cuts your blink rate, so the oil glands are squeezed less often and tears dry out faster. Simple habits help: keep your screen slightly below eye level, keep AC and fan air off your face, and follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink fully.
How we test for dry eye.
A dry eye check at EYON measures your tear film instead of guessing:
- IDRA dry eye analyser
- Looks at tear quality, the lid oil glands and how stable your tear film is.
- Non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT)
- A ring pattern is projected onto your eye and a camera times how long your tears stay stable after a blink. No dye is used.
- Meibography
- An infrared photograph of your eyelid glands. It shows whether glands are blocked or already lost, and lets us compare before and after treatment.
- Lid and gland examination
- The doctor checks the lid edges and gland openings under a microscope and gently presses the glands to see the quality of the oil.
Treatment works in steps.
- Daily home care
- Warm compresses, lid-edge cleaning and blinking exercises.
- Eye drops
- Lubricating drops to restore the tear film; anti-inflammatory drops only when prescribed.
- Medicines if needed
- Short courses of tablets or ointment to calm lid inflammation, only on a doctor's advice.
- In-clinic treatment
- MiBoFlo, to soften and clear blocked oil glands.
Drops relieve symptoms but don't open blocked glands. The earlier MGD is treated, the more of your glands you keep, because glands that are lost generally don't regrow.
MiBoFlo, Pune's first, at EYON Kharadi.
MiBoFlo (MiBo Thermoflo) is a gentle in-clinic treatment for evaporative dry eye and blocked meibomian glands.
- You lie back with your eyes closed and a clear gel is applied to the lids.
- A smooth probe held at a steady 42°C is moved over the outside of your closed eyelids for about 10 to 12 minutes per eye, with a gentle massage.
- The specialist then presses the lids to clear the softened oil from the glands.
- Nothing enters the eye. There are no needles or cuts, and you can go back to normal activities the same day.
A course is usually about three sessions, roughly two weeks apart, and some patients need top-up sessions later. Your doctor suggests a plan after your dry eye assessment. MiBoFlo is not a one-time cure: improvement is gradual, varies from person to person, and works best alongside daily home care. A 2022 study of 203 eyes in the American Journal of Ophthalmology reported better symptom scores and more stable tears six months after treatment.

Dry eye FAQs.
Why do my eyes water if they are dry?
When the oil layer is missing, tears evaporate quickly and the eye gets irritated. It makes extra tears, but without oil to hold them they run off instead of protecting the surface.
Will eye drops cure my dry eye?
Drops relieve symptoms, but they don't unblock the oil glands. If blocked glands are the cause, treatment also needs warm compresses, lid care and sometimes in-clinic treatment such as MiBoFlo.
What is meibography?
An infrared photo of your eyelid glands. It shows blockage and gland loss that can't be seen in a normal exam.
Is MiBoFlo painful?
No. It is gentle warmth and massage on the outside of your closed eyelids. Nothing enters the eye and there are no needles.
How many MiBoFlo sessions will I need?
Usually about three, roughly two weeks apart, but it depends on how blocked your glands are. Your doctor plans this after your dry eye assessment.
How much does dry eye treatment cost?
It depends on the tests and treatment you need. Please call us on 090909 93399 for current charges.
When should I see a doctor urgently?
Eye pain, sudden loss of vision, strong sensitivity to light or a very red eye need same-day care. These are not typical of dry eye.
