What is meibomian gland dysfunction?
Your eyelids contain tiny oil glands called meibomian glands. Their oil forms the top layer of your tears and stops them from drying out too fast. When the oil becomes thick or the glands get blocked, tears evaporate quickly and your eyes feel dry and irritated. Long hours on screens, air-conditioned offices, contact lenses, age and some skin conditions can all play a part.
How does MiBoFlo work?
A smooth, heated probe is moved gently over the outside of your closed eyelids with a little gel. It keeps a steady, controlled temperature of about 42°C, which softens the thickened oil in the glands. Your doctor then clears the glands so healthy oil can flow into the tear film again.

Who is it for?
MiBoFlo may help adults with evaporative dry eye or MGD, especially if eye drops and warm compresses have not given enough relief. It is not right for everyone. We first check your eyes with meibography and our IDRA dry eye analyser to see how your oil glands and tear film are working, then advise whether MiBoFlo suits you.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on how blocked your glands are. Your doctor will suggest a plan after your dry eye assessment.

What does the research say?
A study of 203 eyes published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology (2022) reported better symptom scores and more stable tears six months after treatment, with no side effects reported.
